The Northern
College of Beauty and Holistic Therapies was established
in 1989.
After
travelling extensively abroad working as a therapist
in Spain, Greece, Malta, India and many other places,
I realised that my heart was still in Liverpool and
decided to start my own business.
I
started as a mobile therapist and due to demand realised
I would need a base. Within a short time the first Shaina
Myers beauty salon was opened closely followed by The
Northern College of Beauty and Holistic Therapies in
1989.
 This
is my story;
I qualified, as a therapist late in life and as a mature
student was soon to realise that although there were
a variety of private and public colleges where you could
attend courses, most of them catered for the younger
student. To enable me to gain the qualifications I needed
I travelled long distances.
After spending some years abroad and
working in my own salons I realised after advertising
for staff without success that the demand for therapists
was growing and the realisation that the mature student
who was in great demand; meaning anyone from 20 to 60
years of age who had so much to give to the industry,
had nowhere they felt comfortable to train.
Students often felt working alongside
16 to 18 year olds intimidating as often they may have
either been away from training or the workforce for
some time and were looking for a new direction and not
used to the classroom situation.
My greatest ambition was to open a school
to enable those very students to gain qualifications
and achieve their own goals in a safe and friendly atmosphere,
including students who could not afford expensive private
schools.
I
had the opportunity to realise my ambition when in
1989
I opened The Northern College of Beauty and Holistic
Therapies after a request to train a number of students
within the Shaina Myers beauty salons, when the student
numbers grew I moved premises to accommodate the demand.
I have since become well known for my
innovation of small classrooms, intensive courses
and
industry related nformation given by experienced tutors
and have always offered a comprehensive number of
subjects,
which include beauty therapy, nail extensions and Holistic
Therapies.
I believe in Equality of Opportunity
keeping the intensive beauty classes small enabling
each student to have constant attention
from tutors.
I only have tutors that have industry
experience to help students who want to open their own
business or go into employment and the College is located
in the same building as a Multi-national, beauty wholesalers
where students have their own account to enable them
to buy products, tools and equipment if they wish.
My policy is to enable students to keep
in contact with the College tutors after completion
if advice is needed
Also offered is a full range
of nail extensions & nail art courses . All tutors have industry experience
to help anyone who wants to open their own business
and the College is located in the same building as
a Multi-national, beauty wholesalers where students
have their own account to enable them to buy products,
tools and equipment if they wish.
Students are able
to keep in contact with the College after completion
if advice is needed
and the opportunity to practice within the Liverpool
College salon area for more experience is available
for all students. The College has opened a beauty salon
within the College called ' Platinum Beauty' and enables
students if theychoose to practice on clients prior
to taking up employment or self-employment if they
feel this would help them gain further experience in
a real-life industry situation.
The Northern College celebrated
two events at the end of 2003. The first was the
very successful Adult Learning Inspection.
It was remarked that the training provision was of
a high standard with excellent student support.
The second event, due to demand
and massive expansion was the College moving premises.
The new purpose built College has modern facilities
with
dedicated training rooms including a nail studio,
shower room and student rest areas. The large
reception area with its modern cream and brown colour
scheme and laminated floor is a welcoming area for
clients to wait for their treatment.
